Scot's PDPRP Documentation

Note: These are a copy of the online documentation I left at BBSO. Since the WWW server there is now password protected, I reproduced the pages here. Therefore, some of the links and certainly my listed email addresses (sjk@begonias.bbso.njit.edu) won't work, although most will. Thanks.

The PDPRP (PDP-11 Replacement Project) is an attempt to change the telescope control system at Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) from being run on a PDP-11 to an Intel Linux computer. At the same time, the goal is to modernize and improve the software wherever possible. Since time is a limited resource, however, not all the spiffy features we envision have been added. Much of the proposed future capabilities of the software is described in the User's manuals where appropriate.

The Programming Team

Scot Kleinman - the overall structure/communication of the software, the Light Beam Control Code, and the GUI and most of the Telescope Control Software but for the valued contributions of ...

Anders Johannesson - the coordinate routines used in the Telescope Control Software and the "point and click" solar image.

John Varsik - stuck with cleaning up the mess and adding features after the above two bozos have fled the area. Also contributed supporting Macintosh code.

With Special Thanks to Hal Zirin for largely letting me do what I wanted to on this project and to Dennis Dingley, Randy Fear, Jeff Nenow, and Bill Marquette for their suggestions and testing time. In particular, Denny's suggestions and advice have resulted in a significantly better product.

And to Ed Nather for instilling in me his philosophy on doing such instrument-control work.

The Documentation
